The family of Decker moved from Louisiana to Georgia during the summer of 1995. She was writing her first songs and she was making regular trips to Nashville and making rounds of record companies as well as music publishers in search of an agreement. She was just 17 when she gained the attention of a representative of independent label Big Yellow Dog Records who began selling her tracks to labels and artists. Decker's demos, which were reviewed by Mercury Records president David Massey and passed on to L.A. Reid of Island/Def Jam Group affiliated labels group L.A. Reid was able to agree Decker to a deal. Decker, who had been dissatisfied by the two other singles from the album, fought the executives of the record label in search of greater control. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which is more than a country track. Decker's sophomore studio album was revealed with the title Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury put it on hold and three of Decker's country tracks failed. She was then released.
